EPL: Liverpool Rout Ipswich, Haaland Inspires City’s Comeback Win Against Chelsea
Liverpool maintained their six-point lead at the top of the table with a dominant 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town, while Arsenal survived a controversial red card to secure a narrow 1-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
At Anfield, Cody Gakpo shone for the Reds, scoring twice and helping his side cruise to their second consecutive league victory. The scoring began early, with Dominik Szoboszlai netting the opener in the 11th minute after a well-placed assist from Ibrahima Konate. Mohamed Salah then doubled the lead in the 35th minute with a fierce strike, marking his 100th Premier League goal at Anfield and bringing his tally for the season to 23 across all competitions.
Just before halftime, Gakpo sealed Ipswich’s fate by tapping in after Szoboszlai’s shot was parried by goalkeeper Christian Walton. The Dutch international added another goal in the 66th minute, heading home from a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross. Jacob Greaves scored a late consolation for Ipswich, but it did little to ease the pain of their defensive struggles, having conceded 10 goals in their last two league matches.
Liverpool’s victory represents their 16th win from 22 league games this season, keeping them firmly on course for their first English title since 2020. With a game in hand on second-placed Arsenal, the quadruple-chasing Reds look poised to extend their lead.
Meanwhile, Arsenal faced a more challenging match against Wolves, playing with ten men after Myles Lewis-Skelly received a controversial red card for a trip on Matt Doherty just before halftime. The decision sparked outrage from Arsenal, who argued that the foul occurred too far from goal to warrant such punishment. The Premier League Match Centre confirmed the sending-off for “serious foul play.”
Despite being reduced to ten, Arsenal held firm and found the breakthrough in the 74th minute when Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori scored with a half-volley that found its way in off the far post. The win kept the pressure on Liverpool as Arsenal aims to close the gap at the top.
Manchester City overcame a rocky start to defeat Chelsea 3-1, thanks in part to Erling Haaland’s brilliance. The Norwegian scored one goal and assisted another, helping City climb back into the top four and putting pressure on Chelsea, who have now won just once in their last seven league outings.
Bournemouth continued their impressive form, extending their unbeaten streak to 11 matches with a resounding 5-0 victory over Nottingham Forest. Dango Ouattara netted a hat-trick, while Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo also found the net, as Bournemouth climbed to sixth place.
Newcastle United moved into fourth place with a 3-1 win against bottom-placed Southampton, inspired by Alexander Isak, who scored a penalty and added another goal to take his season tally to 19.
Finally, Everton’s boss David Moyes celebrated his 700th Premier League match in style, guiding his team to a 1-0 victory over Brighton, thanks to Iliman Ndiaye’s first-half penalty.
