Finance Minister Flags GHS 195 Billion in Unpaid Contracts
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has raised concerns over an estimated GHS 195 billion in contracts awarded by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) under the previous Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, warning of its implications for the country’s fiscal stability.
Speaking on The Point of View on Wednesday, March 12, Dr. Forson disclosed that the scale of outstanding commitments had forced him to halt payments and seek further clarity from MDAs.
“MDAs had awarded contracts in excess of GHS 195 billion. In addition, payment certificates amounting to GHS 18.2 billion had already been submitted to the Ministry of Finance for processing, while a further GHS 49.5 billion to GHS 49.6 billion remained unprocessed at the Accountant General’s office,” he said.
Dr. Forson’s comments underscore the mounting fiscal challenges facing the new administration as it navigates efforts to stabilise the economy.
The disclosure is likely to intensify scrutiny over public financial management and the broader implications of the previous government’s spending commitments.
With Ghana seeking to consolidate its public finances under an IMF-supported programme, the extent of unpaid obligations will be a key factor in shaping investor confidence and fiscal policy in the coming months.
