FA Cup: Harry Maguire’s Late Header Secures Victory for Manchester United

In a thrilling FA Cup clash, Harry Maguire emerged as the hero for Manchester United, scoring a controversial stoppage-time winner that propelled the holders past Leicester City and into the fifth round. The match, held on February 7, 2025, showcased the resilience of United, who fought back from a goal down to secure the vital victory.

The contest took a frustrating turn for United fans when Leicester took the lead just before halftime. Bobby De Cordova-Reid capitalized on a rebound after Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana made a save from Wilfred Ndidi’s strike, heading the ball home to put Leicester ahead. The first half largely lacked excitement, leaving United supporters anxiously hoping for a turnaround.

The second half saw a revitalized Manchester United, particularly following the introduction of Alejandro Garnacho. The young winger injected pace and creativity into the attack, causing problems for the Leicester defense. It was Garnacho’s cross that ultimately set up the equalizer, finding Rasmus Hojlund.

Although Hojlund’s shot was blocked, substitute Joshua Zirkzee was perfectly positioned to sidefoot the ball home, leveling the score and reigniting hopes for the home side.

With the momentum swinging in their favor, Manchester United pressed for a winner. As the clock ticked down, Bruno Fernandes delivered a free-kick into the box during the dying moments of the match. Maguire, who had been a focal point of criticism in recent weeks, rose high to meet the ball with his head, directing it into the net.

However, the goal was not without controversy, as many believed Maguire was offside. Unfortunately for Leicester, the absence of video assistant referee (VAR) technology at this stage of the FA Cup meant the goal stood.

The late winner brought a wave of relief to Manchester United fans, who have endured a difficult run of results at home, losing five of their last seven games at Old Trafford. With this victory, the Red Devils not only advanced in the tournament but also regained a sense of hope and pride as they continue their quest to defend their FA Cup title.

Leicester City, while disappointed, can take heart from their performance, especially in the first half. However, they will be left wondering what might have been had the officials spotted the potential offside.
