GFA Takes Steps to Implement VAR Technology
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is moving forward with the adoption of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology for its football competitions. A two-day meeting was held with a FIFA VAR delegation to discuss the process.
During the meeting, FIFA representatives Inokuchi Takaaki and Michael Bailey outlined the Implementation Assistance and Approval Programme (IAAP), which helps countries implement VAR. GFA officials, including Deputy General Secretary Ms. Ama Brobey-Williams, welcomed the delegation, sharing greetings from GFA leadership.
Takaaki explained the key steps for implementing VAR, such as training and monitoring. Alex Kotey, the VAR Team Lead in Ghana, provided updates on the country’s preparations, including discussions with VAR service providers.
Bailey highlighted lessons from other countries and stressed the importance of communication and stakeholder involvement in the VAR process.
The meeting included interactive sessions with various GFA members, and concluded with a commitment from GFA leadership to quickly implement VAR technology. The next step is to create a roadmap for implementation, led by Alex Kotey.
This initiative shows the GFA’s commitment to improving refereeing quality and integrity in Ghanaian football.
