Fearless Alcaraz Eyes Historic Third Wimbledon Title
Carlos Alcaraz is poised to defend his Wimbledon title with confidence, believing that overcoming his fears has set him on the path to a potential third consecutive championship. The 22-year-old Spaniard will kick off his title defense against Fabio Fognini on Centre Court this Monday.
Alcaraz aims to join an elite group of players—only Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic have won three or more Wimbledon titles in a row during the Open Era. The world No. 2 enters the tournament riding a remarkable 18-match winning streak, having defeated Djokovic in the finals of the last two editions at the All England Club.
Despite the historic implications of his title defense, Alcaraz is focused solely on his performance. “I’m coming here thinking that I really want to win the title, not thinking about how many players have won three Wimbledons in a row,” he stated during a press conference at Wimbledon. “I just want to be ready and prepare myself in the best way possible.”
Alcaraz warmed up for Wimbledon by clinching the grass-court title at Queen’s Club for the second time, demonstrating his readiness after a successful clay-court season. His recent victory over world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in a thrilling French Open final, where he came back from two sets down and saved three match points, further solidified his confidence.
“I feel the most freedom that I’ve played so far,” Alcaraz said, attributing his success to playing without fear. “When I’m just playing for enjoyment, I always show my best tennis.”
Off the court, Alcaraz has maintained a relaxed mindset, spending time playing golf with former champion Andy Murray and enjoying meals in central London. He emphasized the importance of feeling good off the court to perform well on it.
As the defending champion, Alcaraz expressed excitement about returning to Wimbledon. “It feels great to be back here. I’m really excited to start the tournament. Let’s see how I go,” he concluded.
