FIA Scraps Fastest Lap Bonus Point for 2025 Season
The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) – the organization that controls Formula One car racing – has announced the removal of the fastest lap bonus point starting in the 2025 Formula 1 season, following a recent meeting of the World Motor Sport Council.
This decision comes alongside several other regulatory changes aimed at enhancing the sport’s structure and competitiveness.
During the October meeting, chaired by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, members discussed minor adjustments to the current Sporting and Technical regulations, as well as a comprehensive overhaul of the 2026 ruleset. Notably, the requirement for teams to field a ‘young driver’ during free practice will increase from once to twice per season.
Additionally, significant updates to the 2026 regulations were introduced, focusing on aerodynamics and performance enhancements while promoting closer racing.
The FIA confirmed that three pre-season tests of three days each will be held for the 2026 season to accommodate new power units.
Ben Sulayem expressed gratitude to F1 chief Stefano Domenicali for their ongoing collaboration, emphasizing that these regulatory changes aim to keep Formula 1 financially viable and relevant to road safety without compromising the excitement of racing.
Further refinements to the regulations are expected in the coming months as the FIA, F1, and teams continue their partnership.
