FIFA Set to Test Innovative Referee Body Cams and Offside Detection at Club World Cup
In a groundbreaking move, FIFA has announced the implementation of referee body cameras and an enhanced offside detection system for this year’s Club World Cup in the United States. These innovations aim to improve officiating and enhance the viewing experience for fans.
For the first time in a FIFA tournament, match officials will wear body cameras, allowing selected footage to be broadcast live to audiences. This initiative is expected to provide fans with a unique perspective on the decision-making process during matches.
Additionally, FIFA will introduce an advanced version of its semi-automated offside technology. This system combines artificial intelligence, multiple cameras, and ball sensors to expedite decision-making while ensuring that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) maintains oversight for marginal calls.
“For challenging offside scenarios, the video assistant referee will still validate the information provided by the system before the decision is taken,” FIFA stated in a release.
The Club World Cup, which expands to 32 teams this year, will serve as a key testing ground for these innovative systems, marking a significant step forward in football officiating technology.
