FirstBank Ghana Staff Raise GHS 400,000 to Support Rotary Club Projects

In a commendable demonstration of corporate social responsibility and community spirit, employees of FirstBank Ghana have raised GHS40,000 to support various Rotary Club initiatives in Ghana. With a robust presence of 29 branches and a wide-reaching network of agents providing services across 10 regions, FirstBank Ghana is well-known not only for its banking services but also for its significant contributions to societal well-being.

This year, FirstBank’s employees showed immense dedication by supporting the Rotary Club of Accra Ring Road Central’s annual fundraiser, “Walk for a Child.” This signature event, which brings together individuals and organizations for a common cause, is aimed at raising funds for community projects that have a lasting impact. The funds raised this year will be directed towards the completion of the Berekusu Community Clinic in the Eastern Region of Ghana—a crucial facility expected to provide much-needed healthcare services to the underserved population of Berekusu and its surrounding communities.

The initiative to support Rotary’s efforts was part of FirstBank Ghana’s broader goal to promote the voluntary spirit, leadership, and commitment to community impact among its employees. The voluntary contributions by employees across the bank’s branches, departments and units reflect a deeply ingrained culture of giving back to society.

Supporting Rotary Projects Nationwide

The “Walk for a Child” event, which saw a turnout from some FirstBank staff, culminated in the bank’s employees raising GHS 40,000 to support three key Rotary Club projects. Notably, the largest portion of the funds GHS 20,000 was donated to the Rotary Club of Accra Ring Road Central President, Albert Bahun-Wilson the principal organizer of the annual walk to complete a clinic the Club is constructing for the residents of Berekuso town in the Eastern region.

Additionally, FirstBank employees extended their generosity to two other clubs, both of which are led by the bank’s own staff members. GHS10,000 was donated to the Rotary E-Club of Ghana, whose president, Ama Amonoo Amevor, works with the Retail Products Team at FirstBank. Similarly, GHS10,000 was given to the Rotaract Club of Accra Ring Road Central, led by Lawrence Buhun-Wilson from the Corporate Banking department.

These contributions will support these clubs’ flagship projects, all of which aim to improve healthcare, education, and community development in various regions of Ghana. The bank’s leadership has encouraged the spirit of voluntary giving as part of a broader vision to empower employees to actively engage in community-building efforts.

High-Level Endorsement from Leadership

The initiative received strong backing from the top echelons of FirstBank Ghana’s leadership that has since 2019, supported the Rotary Club of Accra Ring Road Central with cash donations for various child-focused projects. The “Walk for a Child” event which took place at the University of Ghana campus on the 14th of September 2024 was graced by the bank’s Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Victor Yaw Asante, who led by example and participated in the walk alongside other Executives. Notable among the leadership present were Mr. Allen Quaye, Head of Retail Banking, and Mr. Enoch Vanderpuye, Country Team Lead, Marketing and Corporate Communications. Their active involvement in the event highlighted the importance the bank places on being a socially responsible institution that not only drives economic growth but also contributes to societal development.

Impacting Lives and Communities

The GHS40,000 total contribution from FirstBank Ghana’s employees was raised through a coordinated effort involving all the bank’s branches, departments and units. Staff members were encouraged to contribute toward the Rotary projects, and the outcome was a clear reflection of their shared commitment to making a lasting difference in the communities the FirstBank brand serves in.

As the role of businesses in promoting social change continues to grow, FirstBank Ghana has positioned itself as a leader in fostering community development through employee engagement. By aligning itself with reputable organizations like Rotary International, the bank is not only enhancing its corporate image but also building a legacy of sustainable community impact.

With FirstBank Ghana’s leadership actively promoting such initiatives, the bank is setting a precedent for other financial institutions to follow. Its continued investment in both the professional growth of its employees and the well-being of the communities it serves has cemented its reputation as a socially responsible corporate entity.

This initiative underscores the collective power of voluntary giving and the lasting impact businesses can make by empowering their employees to engage in community-building efforts. The three Rotary Clubs expressed gratitude to the Bank
