Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Mikey Garcia bout possible for December 9th
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is rumored to return to the ring for an exhibition match against retired former four-division world champion Mikey Garcia on December 9th on Showtime PPV.
If the Mayweather-Garcia Showtime pay-per-view card comes off, it would be in direct competition with the Devin Haney vs. Regis Prograis event on the same night on December 9th on DAZN PPV.
Showtime would risk a total disaster in terms of pay-per-view buys if they compete with the Haney-Prograis event on the same night, but I guess it doesn’t matter if the rumored Mayweather-Mikey event bombs.
It’s not been confirmed that the Mayweather vs. Mikey exhibition will take place, but it’s being discussed. This kind of trainwreck would be right up Mayweather’s alley.
It would be a stupid idea for Mayweather to place an exhibition on the same night as Prograis vs. Haney, but if Showtime is OK with this, it’s on them.
Mikey (40-2, 30 KOs) retired two years ago after his one-sided ten round decision loss to Sandor Martin in 2021, and he’s lucked pretty chunky around the face since then.
Garcia is not the slender fighter he’d once been while campaigning at featherweight in 2013. He’s been eating quite well since retiring from the sport a couple of years ago
The undercard will feature a junior middleweight rematch between former WBA/WBC welterweight champions Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman and Danny Garcia. It’s fitting that Mayweather would include Thurman on his undercard, as he’s seemingly retired and living in the past.
Thurman’s career as a major player at 147 ended six years ago when he fought Danny in a grueling match in 2017, winning by a close twelve round decision.
Some boxing fans believe Danny Garcia ruined Thurman with the punishment he dished out against the talkative, self-promoting ‘One Time.’
Nowadays, Thurman is mainly seen as a balding guy who does a lot of interviews on YouTube, talking about the days when he used to fight and sounding like an old person in his 80s, remembering his youth.
To listen to Thurman talk, it’s hard to believe he’s only 34 because he talks so much about the past and not living in the present.
For Mayweather, using Mikey Garcia as his next opponent for an exhibition match would be a tremendous upgrade to the low-level fighters he’s been facing since started doing these things in 2018.
It would be hazardous for the 46-year-old Mayweather to fight an exhibition match against Mikey unless there were some kind of agreement on Garcia’s part to take it easy on him.
In his recent exhibition matches, Floyd Mayweather appeared much older than he used to be, with his hand speed and reflexes not as sharp as they once were.
Mikey Garcia could potentially embarrass Mayweather if he doesn’t hold back, which might actually be a positive outcome. If Mayweather loses badly, he may stop participating in exhibition matches, which would please many fans.
