Former Black Stars Midfielder Agyemang Badu Calls for Increased Support for Women’s Football in Ghana
Former Black Stars midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu has praised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for its significant strides in promoting women’s football, while urging for greater support and investment to further elevate the game. As the 2025/26 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League (WPL) season approaches, Badu’s comments highlight the growing potential of women’s football in Ghana.
The new season is set to begin on *October 31, 2025, and will run until **April 27, 2026*, featuring 20 teams split into Northern and Southern Zones. Badu commended the GFA for changing the narrative around women’s football and emphasized the need for increased sponsorship and resources to ensure the league’s success.
“I have been visiting some of the clubs and watching some of the games. You can see they have done a great job. We can do more,” Badu stated. “The way they have started, I think we need to commend the FA for what they have done, and that is reflected in the performance of our Black Queens.”
Badu pointed out the importance of providing equal attention to the women’s league, especially now that the men’s competition is experiencing a surge in commercial support. “They deserve every accolade now. Whatever the government wants to do for them, we would appreciate that. Now that we have gathered a lot of sponsorships for the Ghana Premier League for the men, I believe the women will gradually benefit as well,” he added.
Defending champions Police Ladies will aim to retain their title after a dominant 2024/25 season, while newly promoted clubs such as Northern City Ladies and Ashtown Ladies in the Northern Zone, along with Oak Ladies and Samartex Ladies in the Southern Zone, will look to make their mark in the league.
