NCA denies licensing Starlink operations in Ghana

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has officially addressed the purported sale and operations of Starlink equipment in Ghana.

In a statement issued on Thursday, December 2023, the NCA clarified that it has not granted any license for the operations of Starlink in the country, nor has it type-approved any of its equipment.

Further asserting that any entity providing electronic communication services in Ghana without proper licensing or authorization from the NCA is in direct violation of Section 3(1) of the Electronic Communications Act 2008, Act 775.

The NCA emphasized the legal requirement, stating that “a person shall not operate a public electronic communications service or network or provide a voice telephony service without a licence granted by the Authority,” as outlined in the Electronic Communications Act.

The regulatory body urged the general public to exercise caution and refrain from patronizing any equipment or service claiming to be affiliated with Starlink.

Furthermore, individuals involved in the sale or operations of the service have been directed by the NCA to cease and desist from doing so immediately.

The NCA, as a legally established entity, affirmed its commitment to ensuring fair participation and competition in the market, with a focus on safeguarding the interests of its licensees and consumers.
