Ghana Armed Forces Denies Allegations of Coup Intentions, Reaffirms Commitment to Democracy
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has firmly refuted allegations made by Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), suggesting that GAF had threatened to take control of the country if electoral violence escalated beyond the capacity of the Ghana Police Service.
These allegations were reportedly made in reference to press conferences allegedly held by GAF in 2016 and 2020.
In a statement, GAF clarified that it has never conducted a press conference declaring such intentions, nor does it have any plans to stage a coup.
The Armed Forces emphasized that its role is to support the Ghana Police Service when assistance is requested, which should not be construed as an intention to overthrow the government.
GAF in the statement issued on Friday, August 23, reiterated its commitment to upholding the democratic process and resisting any attempts, by individuals or groups, to unlawfully seize power.
The Armed Forces also called on civil society organizations and the media to avoid using its name in ways that could inflame political tensions. GAF urged all stakeholders to contribute to maintaining a peaceful environment, ensuring that citizens can freely engage in lawful activities without fear.
As the December 2024 elections approach, GAF expressed its anticipation of peaceful elections and cautioned against associating the military with actions that could exacerbate political tensions in the country.
