Ghana Boxing Authority Promises Enhanced Medical Care for Boxers Following Bahubali’s Tragic Death

In a heartfelt response to the tragic death of boxer Ernest Akushey, known as ‘Bahubali’, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has vowed to implement stricter medical protocols to ensure the safety of fighters in the sport.

Bahubali passed away just 11 days after his super middleweight bout against Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena on September 12. Reports indicate that he suffered internal bleeding during the match, which concluded with an eighth-round defeat for Akushey. His unexpected demise, confirmed early Tuesday morning, has raised significant concerns about the safety measures currently in place for boxers in Ghana.

Roger Banor, the acting president of the GBA, expressed his condolences and emphasized the urgent need for improved post-fight medical care. “I would like to say sorry once again to the family. It is a learning curve and a wake-up call for us all,” Banor told JoySports. He highlighted that the incident underscores the importance of proper care following a fight, noting, “Once after a boxing fight, you have to take care of yourself and need days of rest before doing some things.”

Banor further announced that in collaboration with the GBA’s medical team, an initiative is being developed to ensure that boxers undergo medical evaluations after their matches. “Together with the medical team of the Ghana Boxing Authority, we are putting together a structure that just after fights, [after a few days], you will be asked to see the medical department so they take care of you,” he added.

Bahubali was not only a notable figure in the super middleweight division but also competed in the light heavyweight category. His tragic death marks the second loss for the Ghanaian boxing community this year, following the passing of Gabriel Aluwasegun in April.

The GBA’s commitment to enhancing medical protocols aims to prevent further tragedies in the sport, ensuring that boxers receive the necessary care and support both during and after their careers.
