Ghana Drops Four Places To 77th In Latest FIFA Rankings After AFCON Disappointment
In a disappointing turn of events, Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, has dropped four places in the latest FIFA rankings for November, now sitting at 77th globally.
This decline follows their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a significant setback for a team that once held high hopes of returning to continental glory.
Previously ranked 73rd in October and 14th in Africa, Ghana’s fall from grace can be attributed to a dismal performance in the AFCON qualifiers.
The Black Stars managed to scrape together just three points from a series of three draws and three losses, leaving them at the bottom of Group F.
The team’s struggles were epitomized in their recent matches. In their penultimate qualifier, Ghana drew 1-1 against Angola, but the situation worsened in their final game when they suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat at home to Niger. This loss not only sealed their fate in the qualifiers but also highlighted the challenges the team has faced throughout the year.
Despite the drop in their global ranking, the Black Stars have managed to maintain their position as the 14th-best team in Africa.
However, they find themselves trailing behind formidable rivals such as Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Nigeria, among others. Notably, Niger, their Group F adversaries, experienced a significant boost, climbing nine spots in the rankings from 131 to 122 following their win over Ghana.
Ghana’s decline in the FIFA rankings has been a gradual process throughout 2024, with its highest point being 67th in February. Since then, the team has struggled to regain their footing, with rankings fluctuating between 64th and 73rd in the months leading up to November.
Looking ahead, the Black Stars will be eager to turn their fortunes around as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which resume in March.
