Ghana FA vice president vows to get best coach for Black Stars

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President Mark Addo has vowed to choose a proficient coach for the Black Stars.

Addo, who chairs the five-member committee responsible for appointing a new coach following the departure of Chris Hughton, emphasised the need for top-tier leadership for the team.

Hughton’s exit came in the aftermath of a challenging 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign. The Black Stars finished third in Group B with a defeat and two draws, failing to advance to the next stage.

Addo, leading the committee for the second time, expressed confidence in selecting the best coach based on specific criteria.

“This is my second time leading a committee to pick a coach, and I can tell Ghanaians that we will hire the best coach for the Black Stars according to the criteria,” assured Addo in an interview with Akoma FM.

Highlighting the extensive interest in the coaching position, Addo revealed that over 500 applications had been received, and the committee is currently in the process of shortlisting candidates, aiming to complete the selection by the next week.

“We received over 500 applications for the job and have shortlisted a handful. We are currently going through them and want to finish by next week,” he told Kumasi-based Akoma FM.

The GFA’s criteria for the new coach include a 15-year experience at the highest level with a winning track record.

Rumors surrounding potential candidates include notable figures like Herve Renard, Mauritania coach Amir Abdou, and former Gambia coach Tom Saintfiet.

Addo was also head of the committee which brought in Milovan Rajevac for a second stint with a Black Stars in 2021.

As the nation eagerly awaits the announcement, the focus remains on securing a coach who can lead the Black Stars to success in future competitions.

The next coach’s immediate task will be to lead the team in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic in June.
