Ghana Holds Wreath-Laying Ceremony at Jubilee House in Honour of Helicopter Crash Victims
A solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Jubilee House on Thursday, August 7, in memory of the eight individuals who lost their lives in the recent military helicopter crash, which has cast a shadow of grief across the nation.
The ceremony, observed at the Ceremonial Garden of the Presidency, formed part of a three-day national mourning period declared by government. It drew attendance from bereaved family members, top government officials, members of the Ghana Armed Forces, and citizens, all united in mourning.
Among the victims honoured were Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Samuel Sarpong; Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed; and former parliamentary candidate, Mr Samuel Aboagye.
The three officers from the Ghana Armed Forces — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah — who perished in the line of duty, were also remembered.
In a quiet and dignified setting, wreaths were laid in their honour as a symbol of national gratitude and collective grief. The atmosphere was marked by silence and solemn reflection, underscoring the gravity of the tragedy and the sense of loss felt across the country.
The three-day period of national mourning is expected to conclude on Saturday, August 9, with an “Evening of Reflections and Memorials” to be held at the Forecourt of the State House.
