Ghana Olympic Committee Inaugurates Ten New Committees to Boost Sports Development in Ghana

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has officially inaugurated ten new committees aimed at enhancing sports development and advancing the Olympic and Commonwealth Sports Movement in the country. The launch ceremony took place recently, bringing together key stakeholders dedicated to promoting sports at the grassroots level and increasing women’s participation.

Among the newly formed committees are Legal, Marketing, Fundraising and Sponsorship, Olympic Education, Culture and School Sports, Games and Technical, and National Federations Relations. Additional committees include Medical and Anti-Doping, Events and Programmes, Finance, and Women in Sports, as well as Government Relations and Stakeholders.

At the swearing-in ceremony, GOC Vice President Mawuko Afadzinu praised the members for their commitment and urged them to remain steadfast in their mission. He highlighted the challenges that lay ahead but expressed confidence in their leadership and collaborative spirit.

Afadzinu stated, “So, I charge you today: be bold. Challenge outdated assumptions. Ask ‘why not?’ when you are told ‘this is how it’s done.’ Be accountable—not just to the GOC Executive Board, but to the young girl in Wa running barefoot who dreams of Olympic gold. Her dream is your KPI. Be collaborative.”

Emphasizing the importance of unity, he added, “Tear down the walls between your committees. Your shared enemy is mediocrity, not each other. You will face bureaucracy, cynicism, and budget constraints. See them not as obstacles, but as opponents to be defeated on the way to the podium.”

Kobby Woyome, Chairman of the Government Relations Sub-Committee, spoke on behalf of the committees, expressing enthusiasm for their roles. He assured attendees that they would utilize their networks and expertise to drive sports development in Ghana.

The event was also attended by Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankra, Director-General of the National Sports Authority, who underscored the significance of these committees in shaping the future of sports in the nation.

With a diverse range of expertise represented in the newly inaugurated committees, the GOC is poised to make significant strides in advancing the Olympic and Commonwealth sports agenda in Ghana.
