Ghana pioneers free mobile roaming pact with The Gambia and Benin

In a groundbreaking move towards bolstering regional connectivity, the Government, in collaboration with the National Communications Authority, is forging ahead with plans to introduce complimentary mobile roaming services for its citizens traveling to The Gambia and Benin.

This strategic initiative, announced by Vice President Dr. Mahmud Bawumia during a prestigious platinum night event, underscores Ghana’s commitment to fostering seamless communication channels across West Africa.

The envisaged agreement aims to eliminate additional charges for data and mobile services, easing the burden on Ghanaian travelers, particularly businessmen, tourists, and traders, while enhancing cross-border economic activities.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that this milestone forms part of a broader digital integration agenda championed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), reinforcing the region’s quest for technological advancement and economic convergence.

Furthermore, the Vice President urged telecommunications service providers, exemplified by Telecel’s recent entry into Ghana, to prioritize affordability and service quality, acknowledging persisting challenges in voice communication.

Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Telecel Ghana, reiterated the company’s commitment to investment in digital infrastructure, including financial technology and data services, as part of its strategic vision to enrich the telecommunications landscape.

Despite Vodafone’s departure from the Ghanaian market, the government retains a notable 30% stake in Telecel Ghana, signaling its enduring commitment to fostering competition and regulatory oversight in the telecommunications sector.

The platinum night event served as a platform for Telecel to engage with industry stakeholders and policymakers, fostering dialogue and synergy in the pursuit of a digitally empowered future.

As Ghana spearheads initiatives to promote regional connectivity and economic integration, the implications of these pioneering agreements extend beyond telecommunications, offering a glimpse into the evolving landscape of West African cooperation and technological advancement.
