Ghana Premier League Set to Resume on March 7
The Ghana Premier League (GPL) will make its much-anticipated return on Friday, March 7, as confirmed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA). This announcement comes after a three-week suspension due to recent incidents of hooliganism that raised serious concerns about safety at league matches.
The GFA stated that the league’s resumption is contingent upon a comprehensive safety and security inspection of all venues, currently being conducted in collaboration with the Ministry for Sports and Recreation.
In recent days, the GFA has been actively training stakeholders on the Enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols 2025, aimed at preventing further violent incidents in stadiums.
The decision to halt league activities was prompted by a tragic event during a match involving Asante Kotoko, where fan Francis Nana Pooley Frimpong lost his life. Following this incident, Asante Kotoko called for improved safety measures from the GFA. The club announced its readiness to return to competitive football after Pooley’s funeral, scheduled for March 6.
In preparation for the league’s resumption, the GFA has outlined the fixtures for the upcoming matchdays. Matchday 20 is set for March 18 to March 20, followed by Matchday 21 from April 1 to April 3, and Matchday 22 from April 15 to April 17, 2025.
Additionally, Kotoko’s postponed MTN FA Cup tie against Sekondi Eleven Wise will take place on March 12, 2025.
