Ghana Prepares for U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Opener Against DR Congo
Ghana’s U-20 national football team, the Black Satellites, is gearing up for their opening match against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) in the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, taking place in Egypt. The match is set for May 2, 2025, at 9 PM local time (1800 GMT) at the Suez Stadium. This tournament, which commenced on April 27, 2025, will run until May 18, 2025, and is crucial for the Satellites as they aim to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile later this year.
Head Coach Desmond Ofei has expressed optimism about the team’s preparations and readiness for the tournament. He acknowledged the strength of their opponents, describing DR Congo as a “strong, aggressive, and direct” side, but remains confident in his team’s ability to showcase their talent and secure a positive result in their opening match. Ofei emphasized the importance of a match-by-match focus, aiming to start strong and build momentum throughout the tournament.
Captain Ofori McCarthy echoed this sentiment, highlighting the team’s motivation and readiness. He stated, “We expect a very competitive game, but we are ready. Our preparations have been good, and the team is highly motivated”.
McCarthy also noted the significance of the first game, stressing that the team’s primary objective is to qualify from the group stage and pursue a fifth continental title for Ghana.
Ghana is placed in Group C alongside DR Congo, Senegal, and the Central African Republic. After facing DR Congo, the Black Satellites will take on Senegal on May 5, 2025, and conclude the group phase against the Central African Republic on May 8, 2025. The top two teams from the group will advance to the quarterfinals, along with the two best third-placed teams from across all groups, providing a pathway to the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
