Ghana Ranks Among Africa’s Top 10 Most Expensive Fuel Markets Despite Cedi Gains

Ghana has been ranked 10th in Africa for the highest fuel prices as of June 2025, even though local prices have declined for the seventh time this year.

This development comes despite the Ghanaian cedi appreciating by a remarkable 24% since January 2025.

According to data from GlobalPetrolPrices.com, fuel in Ghana currently sells at $1.399 per litre, placing the country 60th globally on the fuel price index.

Central African Republic tops list

The Central African Republic remains the most expensive country in Africa for fuel, with prices recorded at $1.830 per litre. Following closely are Senegal at $1.725, Zimbabwe at $1.540, Côte d’Ivoire at $1.490, and Burkina Faso at $1.481, taking 2nd to 5th places respectively.

Cameroon ($1.464), Malawi ($1.460), Morocco ($1.442), and Uganda ($1.402) fill the 6th to 9th spots on the continental ranking, just ahead of Ghana.

Ghana and Uganda join list; Guinea and Sierra Leone exit

In contrast to the previous month’s top 10 rankings, June has seen the exit of Guinea and Sierra Leone, making way for Ghana and Uganda. Several countries in the top 10, including Senegal, Zimbabwe, and Côte d’Ivoire, recorded fuel price hikes over the last month.

Price relief at pumps in mid-June

From 16 June 2025, fuel prices at the pumps in Ghana began to ease. Selected fuel stations quoted petrol at GH¢10.99 per litre, while diesel prices dropped from GH¢12.75 to GH¢12.45.

The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies attributed this reduction to the cedi’s continued appreciation against the US dollar. It also highlighted the government’s decision to suspend the GH¢1 fuel levy, which prevented an anticipated price hike.

Ghana’s fuel market still burdened

Despite ongoing relief measures, fuel remains expensive in Ghana relative to most African nations. Analysts continue to urge long-term structural solutions to stabilise the petroleum sector and buffer consumers from future volatility.
