Ghana Reaffirms Strategic Partnership with UNDP in Advancing Fiscal Stability and Sustainable Development
Deputy Minister for Finance, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has reaffirmed Ghana’s strong partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), emphasising the agency’s critical role in supporting the country’s fiscal reforms, climate resilience agenda, and medium-term development goals.
The Deputy Minister made the remarks during a courtesy call by UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Niloy Banerjee, and his delegation at the Ministry of Finance in Accra.
In his address, Mr. Ampem commended the UNDP for aligning its interventions with the Government’s 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, adding that such alignment remains crucial as Ghana navigates its post-COVID-19 recovery path.
“We recognise UNDP as a thought leader and strategic partner and acknowledge the value of the organisation’s support in bridging financial gaps and advancing economic development,” he stated.
$60m in UNDP Investments Acknowledged
Mr. Ampem praised the UNDP’s consistent development support, disclosing that the agency had disbursed over $60 million in the past five years across key sectors including governance, climate action, youth employment, and digital innovation.
“UNDP has been instrumental in supporting a broad range of development initiatives, including sustainable finance and capacity building,” he added, while calling for additional support to enhance the country’s domestic revenue mobilisation efforts.
Key areas of UNDP intervention include Ghana’s Integrated National Financing Framework (INFF), development of a national climate finance strategy, and the SDG Investor Map, which highlights private sector investment opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and green energy.
UNDP Commits to Deeper Collaboration
On his part, UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Niloy Banerjee, lauded the Government of Ghana for adopting transformative policy measures aimed at fostering macroeconomic stability and inclusive growth.
He reaffirmed the UNDP’s readiness to deepen cooperation with the Government, pledging support for ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts and engagement under the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) for 2023–2025.
“The UNSDCF remains a key platform to support Ghana’s national development priorities, particularly in the areas of governance, climate resilience, and inclusive economic growth,” Mr. Banerjee noted.
The meeting concluded with both parties expressing their shared commitment to strengthening the Ghana-UNDP partnership as a catalyst for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and building long-term economic resilience.
