Ghana Secures Five New Visa Waiver Agreements in 2025
Ghanaian citizens will no longer require visas to travel to São Tomé and Príncipe, Colombia, the Commonwealth of Dominica, and Mozambique, following the unanimous ratification of four new Visa Waiver Agreements by Parliament earlier this week. The announcement was made by the Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who presented the agreements to the House.
This development brings the total number of new visa waiver deals ratified in 2025 to five, including an earlier agreement finalised with Morocco.
“The Mahama administration is determined to make the Ghanaian passport one of the most valuable and respected travel documents in the world,” Hon Ablakwa declared in a statement shared via social media X. “We shall keep working in your best interest. For God and Country.”
The new travel agreements are part of a broader foreign policy and mobility strategy aimed at improving international access and travel freedom for Ghanaian citizens. The policy forms a key component of the Mahama campaign’s diaspora and international cooperation agenda, which emphasises the importance of global connectivity, trade, and educational mobility.
Hon. Ablakwa also assured the public that the government is investing in enhanced passport security to prevent abuse by criminal syndicates. “We are also investing in rigorous enhanced security protocols to ensure international criminal gangs do not have access to our passports,” he noted.
He further indicated that additional visa waiver agreements are currently under negotiation and are expected to be brought before Parliament for ratification before the end of the year.
With these latest agreements, Ghana continues to strengthen bilateral relations across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, while offering its citizens greater freedom of movement and global opportunity. The visa waivers are also expected to boost tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between Ghana and the respective countries.
The ratified countries—São Tomé and Príncipe, Colombia, Dominica, Mozambique, and Morocco—now join a growing list of nations offering visa-free access to Ghanaian passport holders, reinforcing Ghana’s efforts to expand its diplomatic footprint and global mobility index.
