Ghana to receive $300m first tranche of $1bn World Bank budget support funding in September

Ghana is poised to receive a significant financial boost as it prepares to receive the first tranche of $300 million out of a total $1 billion budget support funding from the World Bank.

According to Pierre Laporte, the Country Director of the World Bank for Ghana, the disbursement of the funds is scheduled to take place in September of this year.

This budget support is a direct result of the government’s successful securing of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. It is important to note that the $1 billion budget support from the World Bank is separate from the $3 billion already anticipated to be received from the IMF.

Speaking in an interview on Joy News, Pierre Laporte provided insights into the disbursement timeline, stating that the $1 billion funds will be spread out over the next three years, from 2023 to 2026.

This extended disbursement period allows for sustained support to Ghana’s development initiatives and provides flexibility in implementing projects and programs.

The World Bank funding is expected to be channeled towards various projects and initiatives outlined in Ghana’s 2023 budget. While specific details were not disclosed, it is likely that priority sectors such as infrastructure development, education, healthcare, agriculture, and private sector support will receive targeted investment.

By directing funds towards these areas, the government aims to drive inclusive growth, alleviate poverty, and enhance the overall well-being of Ghanaians.

The approval and disbursement of this budget support funding from the World Bank serve as a testament to the international community’s confidence in Ghana’s economic prospects and the government’s commitment to implementing effective policies and reforms.

The injection of funds will enable the government to expedite the implementation of its development agenda and unlock new opportunities for sustainable economic growth.

The anticipated disbursement of the first tranche of $300 million from the World Bank’s $1 billion budget support funding marks a significant milestone for Ghana’s economic development. With this financial support, the government is well-positioned to accelerate progress on key projects and initiatives outlined in the 2023 budget, fostering long-term prosperity and socio-economic advancement for the nation.
