Ghana’s 5G Launch: NGIC Eyes Regional Leadership in Digital Transformation
Next Generation Infrastructure Company (NGIC) has officially launched Ghana’s first 5G network, a move which Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NGIC, Tenu Awoonor, describes as positioning Ghana to lead in digital transformation across the Sub-Saharan Africa region.
Speaking at the launch of the 5G technology on November 1, Mr. Awoonor highlighted the technology’s potential as a “catalyst for growth, development, and empowerment,” underscoring its broad impact across sectors ranging from education to healthcare.
“With virtual reality-enabled learning, real-time crop monitoring, and telemedicine, Ghanaian communities can access critical services and information regardless of their location,” he quipped.
NGIC is Ghana’s first neutral service infrastructure provider facilitating 5G access for all telecom operators and internet service providers in the country.
This approach allows NGIC to provide universal 5G access regardless of service provider, promoting inclusivity and broader access to high-speed internet.
Pointing to the global momentum around 5G, Mr Awoonor averred the technology is expected to reach 40% of the world’s population by the end of 2024 while adding over 22 million jobs globally by 2035.
Currently, there are 1.5 billion 5G connections worldwide, a figure anticipated to reach 5.6 billion by 2029.
“5G will be essential to Ghana’s economic fabric, connecting entrepreneurs, startups, and established businesses with the tools to compete on a global scale,” Mr Awoonor added.
Concluding his remarks and underscoring NGIC’s broader mission at the 5G launch, Mr Awoonor said,”Today is not just about launching a network, it’s about investing in the future of Ghana. With 5G, we’re laying the foundation for a more connected and prosperous nation where all Ghanaians, from farmers to students, are empowered to reach new opportunities.”
The 5G technology launch supports Ghana’s Digital Agenda 2030 and aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
