Ghana’s Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren Prepares for Tough WAFCON Quarterfinal Clash Against Algeria

Ahead of the highly anticipated quarterfinal match in the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Ghana’s Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren expressed confidence in his team’s progress while acknowledging the formidable challenge posed by Algeria.

Speaking to the media, Bjorkegren praised his squad’s preparation and the importance of nurturing a positive team culture as they gear up for a tough encounter against a well-organized Algerian side. “We need to maintain our style of play and take advantage of scoring opportunities,” he stated, emphasizing that the team must not shy away from the challenge ahead.

Staying in Berkane rather than traveling to Rabat for the match, Bjorkegren noted the benefits of having an extra day off, allowing the players to relax at the beach instead of spending time on a bus. “I think that really helps us,” he said, reflecting on the decision to remain in the same hotel for their third game.

Bjorkegren is familiar with Algeria’s coach, having faced him during his time in the French League and in China. “The Algerian team is very organized, potentially the best in the tournament,” he acknowledged. “It’s going to be a difficult game for us, for sure.”

With a blend of experience and youth on his roster, Bjorkegren highlighted that the team is still in a phase of development. “We’re a pretty new team with many young players. I’ve only been with the team for five months, but we can see improvement with each game,” he said, urging his players to seize the opportunity to advance to the next round.

Addressing the threat posed by Algeria, the coach emphasized the need for strategic play. “We need to create better chances and not just rely on long shots. It’s going to be tough, but I believe in the players,” he asserted.

The return of key player Doris Boaduwaa, regarded as one of the nation’s best, adds depth to the squad. “We will always miss her when she’s unavailable, but our strength lies in our depth,” Bjorkegren noted. “I’m happy that she’s back.”

As Ghana prepares for the match, the historical record is in their favor, with two wins against Algeria out of three encounters. However, Bjorkegren reminded everyone that this is a new team, with 20 players experiencing their first AFCON, and that each match presents a unique challenge.
