Ghana’s digital divide persists as 47% of population remains offline

According to a recent report, Ghana’s internet penetration rate stood at 53% of the total population at the start of 2022, with 16.99 million internet users recorded in January of that year.

The report, titled the Digital 2023 Global Overview, revealed that internet users in Ghana increased by 350,000 (+2.1%) between 2021 and 2022.

However, it also revealed that 15.07 million people in Ghana did not use the internet at the start of 2022, meaning that 47% of the population remained offline.

The total population of Ghana in January 2022 was 32.06 million. The report also noted that issues related to COVID-19 continue to impact research into internet adoption, suggesting that actual internet user figures may be higher than the published numbers.

Additionally, the report stated that there were 8.80 million social media users in Ghana in January 2022, equivalent to 27.4% of the total population.

However, it is important to note that these users may not represent unique individuals.
