Ghana’s Minority in Parliament Donates GH₵100,000 to Black Queens Following WAFCON Bronze Medal Win
In a show of support for Ghana’s women’s national football team, the Black Queens, the Minority in Parliament has donated GH₵100,000 in recognition of their impressive third-place finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) held in Morocco.
The announcement was made during a session in Parliament by Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who commended the team for their resilience and strong performance throughout the tournament. “Mr. Speaker, while we’ve heard many words of commendation, tangible financial support has yet to follow. We, the Minority Members of Parliament, are humbled yet proud to be the first to publicly recognize the dedication of the Black Queens by donating GH₵100,000 to the team,” he stated.
The Black Queens returned home on Monday, their stellar performance highlighted by the inclusion of players Grace Asantewaa and Portia Boakye in the tournament’s Team of the Tournament, a recognition of their outstanding contributions during the competition.
This financial support is not just a token of appreciation but also a commitment to the future of women’s football in Ghana.
The Black Queens are set to embark on their quest for back-to-back WAFCON titles with a two-legged qualifier against Egypt later this year, scheduled for October 20 to 28, 2025.
