Ghana Airports Company Reclaims Strategic Lands From McDan Group After Court Ruling

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has secured full possession of more than 16 acres of strategically located land near Kotoka International Airport, following a decisive ruling by an Accra High Court in a long-running dispute with subsidiaries of the McDan Group.

The judgment, delivered on May 6, 2025, grants the state-owned airport operator the right to re-enter and take control of the contested plots, which have been under the control of McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited since 2012. The two companies, both subsidiaries of the McDan Group, had occupied parcels of 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres respectively.

The land, situated adjacent to and opposite Action Chapel International near the airport enclave, had been leased to the McDan entities over a decade ago. However, GACL filed suit earlier this year citing persistent breaches of the lease agreements and the accumulation of unpaid ground rents totalling $26,296.

GACL sought summary judgment on the basis that the defendants lacked a credible defence. The court upheld the claim, ordering the companies to vacate the land and awarding GACL all reliefs requested, including a perpetual injunction against further interference by the McDan entities. The court also imposed GH¢50,000 in legal costs on the defendants.

This latest development follows a broader series of disputes between the McDan Group and GACL. In late 2024, McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport were suspended due to outstanding debts. While those liabilities were later settled, the issue of land lease compliance remained unresolved until the court’s intervention this week.

The successful litigation is being viewed internally as a significant asset recovery milestone for the GACL, with company officials crediting the outcome to the leadership of Managing Director Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare and the efforts of the company’s legal team.
