Government and GFA need each other – Kwesi Nyantakyi

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has urged the government and the Association to put aside their differences and work together for the betterment of the game in the country.

This comes after the government through the Youth and Sports Ministry forced the sacking of underwhelming Black Stars head coach Milovan Rajevac and the dissolution of the Black Stars management committee after the Black Stars’ abysmal performance, exiting at the group stage in the Africa Cup of Nations staged in Cameroon.

There is a perception that government is not in support of the newly constituted technical team of the Black Stars led by Otto Addo with backing from Geroge Boateng, Didi Drmani and Technical Advise from Chris Hughton.

Some government officials had campaigned for Chris Hughton to get be the main man but the GFA offered him an advisory role instead.

“Government needs the Football Association as much as the association also needs government,” Nyantakyi said on GTV Sports Plus.

“FIFA has admonished the FAs to cooperate with governments to develop football but interference is condemned. So, I will preach that as long as possible the government should tolerate and cooperate with the Football Association.

“The province of each of them must be clearly circumscribed so government knows what they can and cannot do,” he added.

The former GFA boss was initailly banned for life from football in October 2018 and fined CHF 500,000 for breaches of FIFA’s ethic code.

He was found guilty of breaking FIFA rules relating to conflicts of interest, bribery and corruption and commission after an investigation by the Ethics Committee of world football’s governing body.

After admitting to having breached several codes of FIFA’s ethics when his appeal was heard at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), his lifetime FIFA ban from football was reduced to 15 years while also lowering his fine of $500,000 to $100,000.
