Gov’t to Raise School Feeding Allocation to GHS 2 Amid Inflation Pressures
Ghana’s government plans to raise the daily school feeding allocation per child from GHS 1.50 to GHS 2.00, a 33% increase aimed at mitigating the impact of rising food prices, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has disclosed.
The measure is expected to be a key feature of Dr Forson’s maiden budget presentation to Parliament on 11 March.
Speaking during an X Space discussion with social media influencer Kalyjay, the minister acknowledged that the current allocation was inadequate.
“Today, unfortunately, we will agree that this amount is too small and can’t even buy one egg,” he said. “We intend to increase that to a minimum of two cedis per child per day.”
The increase comes against a backdrop of persistently high inflation, which has eroded the purchasing power of government allocations for social programmes.
Dr Forson described the adjustment as “significant” and said it was necessary to maintain the viability of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP).
The minister’s remarks follow a series of public engagements, including discussions with traders in Accra’s Central Business District on 8 March.
He dismissed suggestions that these interactions were merely symbolic, insisting that the concerns raised would inform the upcoming budget statement.
