Gov’t Unveils Accra-Kumasi Expressway as Flagship of Big Push Infrastructure Programme
Accra, Ghana – The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, on Thursday, November 13, 2025, presented the 2026 Budget Statement to Parliament, highlighting the Accra-Kumasi Expressway as a cornerstone of the government’s Big Push Infrastructure Programme.
Described as Ghana’s first modern six-lane bi-directional Class A expressway, the project will stretch 198.7 kilometers, connecting Accra to Kumasi through the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions. According to Dr. Forson, the new alignment reduces the current travel distance by over 50 kilometers, cutting it from 250 kilometers to 198.7 kilometers, and is expected to halve travel time between the two major cities.
“The Accra-Kumasi Expressway will reduce transport costs by nearly 40 percent and create over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction,” Dr. Forson said. He added that the infrastructure project will stimulate industrial parks, logistics hubs, and service economies along its route, supporting the 24-Hour Economy and enhancing Ghana’s competitiveness.
The expressway will feature eight major interchanges located at Accra Hub, Adeiso, Asamankese, Akyem Oda, Ofoase, Lake Bosomtwe, and Kumasi, designed to ease urban congestion and improve regional connectivity. Three major bridges over the Birim and Pra Rivers are also part of the project.
In addition, four full-service areas will provide fuel stations, rest stops, restaurants, vehicle repair centres, and emergency medical facilities at Asamankese, Ayirebi, Ofoase, and Lake Bosomtwe. Two modern 20-lane toll plazas at Accra and Kumasi will employ automated systems to ensure efficient revenue collection with minimal delays.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to transform transport logistics in Ghana while supporting economic growth across multiple regions, marking a significant milestone in the government’s infrastructure agenda.
