GPL: Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko Set For 116th Super Clash
Ghana’s fiercest football rivalry reignites on Sunday, May 4, 2025, as Accra Hearts of Oak host arch-rivals Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium for their highly anticipated 116th Super Clash. With just four matches remaining in the 2024/25 Premier League season, both teams have everything to play for in a contest that could significantly impact their respective campaigns.
Hearts of Oak, currently sitting 6th in the league table with 45 points from 29 matches, are vying for a top-four finish—a feat they haven’t achieved since their title-winning season in 2020/21.
Under the guidance of coach Aboubakar Ouattara, the Phobians have shown signs of improvement, collecting eight points from their last five matches (W2, D2, L1).
They boast the league’s best defensive record, having scored 25 goals and conceded just 17. Despite their strong defensive stats, Hearts’ home form has been inconsistent. With seven wins, three draws, and four losses at home this season, they rank among the league’s least impressive teams on their own turf. Ouattara will be eager to secure his first league victory against Kotoko, hoping to break his winless streak in this intense rivalry.
On the other side, Asante Kotoko enters the match with newfound confidence after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aduana FC, which ended a four-match winless run (D2, L2). New coach Abdul Karim Zito, who took charge in April, is aiming for back-to-back wins as Kotoko sits 4th on the table with 50 points—just three behind league leaders Gold Stars FC.
A victory in this clash could thrust them back into the title race.
Despite their attacking prowess, having scored 29 goals and conceded 21, Kotoko has struggled in away games, remaining winless in their last five outings (D3, L2).
Zito will be managing his first league Super Clash, but he carries an unbeaten record against Hearts of Oak from two previous encounters (W1, D1), with his teams yet to concede a goal against them.
With pride, points, and bragging rights on the line, Sunday’s Super Clash promises to deliver another thrilling chapter in the storied rivalry between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
