GPRTU to hold crucial meeting with Transport Ministry over 20% proposed fare increase
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is scheduled to hold a meeting with the Transport Ministry today, April 10, 2024, to discuss potential adjustments to transport fares in light of rising fuel prices.
The proposed fare increase, which is set to take effect on Saturday, April 13, 2024, has been put forward by the Concerned Drivers Association and the Transport Operators of Ghana to help offset the rising operational costs.
David Agboado, the Public Relations Officer for the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, emphasized in an interview that they are steadfast in their proposal for a 20% fare increment.
He stated, “We are meeting with the ministry but it won’t change anything. We will still take the 20%.”
Mr. Agboado further expressed confidence in the drivers’ stance, noting that even if the Transport Ministry attempts to negotiate or delay the fare increase, they remain committed to implementing the 20% hike.
He pointed out that some regions, including the western region and parts of Greater Accra, have already begun to implement the proposed fare increase.
The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana is resolute in their demand for a 20% fare increment, citing the necessity to counterbalance the escalating fuel prices. As the GPRTU convenes with the Transport Ministry today, the outcome of their discussions regarding the fare adjustment remains to be seen.
