GRA signals readiness to implement the E-Levy once approved by Parliament

The Ghana Revenue Authority [GRA] has signaled its intention to fully implement the E-Levy once it secures Parliamentary approval.

The assurance is coming on the back of concerns that the Authority could delay in enforcing the tax since the passage of the Bill has stalled with both the Majority and Minority Caucuses in Parliament still fighting on how it should be applied.

Speaking on the subject, the Commissioner in charge of Custom Divisions at GRA, Kojo Damoah, indicated that the Authority from the conception of the E-Levy idea, through to its hearing on the floor of Parliament, was involved in the entire process and are ready and prepared for its implementation and collection.

“From the beginning of the conception of this levy to its hearing, the GRA has been involved and it will become a wrong policy without involving an important stakeholder like the GRA who is going to be the collector of the tax.

“So we are very much involved and its a continuous engagement between GRA, the Ministry of Finance and various stakeholders. So we are well prepared”, he said.

Mr. Kojo Damoah, also added that the telecommunication networks have also been engaged, adding that the Authority took steps into identifying and engaging all stakeholders who were going to be involved in the collection of the tax.

He further stated that the telecommunication networks have also been engaged on how the Authority wants to proceed with the levy collection.

“The telcos also have been engaged, the private steps we took was to get all the enforcement stakeholders identified and engage them. The telcos before even the hearing of the E-Levy, we had an engagement with them on how we wanted to proceed with this one.

“We involved them and so the engagement has been there, it will continue and I believe that once understanding is reached and Parliament approves it, we will be ready to deal with it”, he added.

Parliament, on the other hand, is expected to pass the E-Levy Bill when it resumes sitting on January 18 next year.
