Green Ghana Project, Wildlife Bill to Strengthen Forest Conservation
The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Akwasi Konadu, has said the government is putting measures in place to conserve Ghana’s forests and support the livelihoods of cocoa farmers.
The Deputy Minister mentioned the Green Ghana Project and the passage of the Wildlife Management Resource Bill, along with initiatives like REDD+ and CREMAs, as actions taken to save forests and care for cocoa farmers.
He said this at the fifth Cocoa and Forest National Oversight Committee meeting in Accra.
Mr Konadu said the government was committed to fighting deforestation associated with cocoa production and improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and their dependents.
On his part, the President of the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF), Mr Chris Vincent, commended Ghana’s partnership with WCF to address the systemic challenges of deforestation linked to cocoa production and the restoration of degraded forests.
“Through this collaboration, we have seen significant achievements on several fronts in Ghana last year,” he added.
Mr Vincent stated that the CFI partnership would enable the cocoa sector to make further progress on crucial issues of forest protection and restoration while strengthening farmer livelihoods and improving the resilience of the cocoa supply chain.
