President Mahama Revokes Appointments of MMDCEs Nationwide
President John Dramani Mahama has revoked the appointments of all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and government-appointed Assembly Members across Ghana, effective immediately.
The move, among the president’s first actions after his swearing-in on January 7, 2025, complies with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940).
In a letter signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President, the directive was communicated to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development.
Interim Arrangements in Place
Per the letter signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, Coordinating Directors at the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) will assume the roles of acting chief executives until new appointments are announced.
The revocation aims to facilitate the appointment of new local government leadership that aligns with the Mahama administration’s vision for decentralization and accelerated development.
