GRTCC Suspends 20% Transport Fare Hike Following Talks with Transport Ministry
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has suspended a proposed 20% upward adjustment in public transport fares, following a crucial meeting with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The suspension comes in response to widespread public backlash and concerns over the lack of broader stakeholder engagement prior to the announcement of the fare increase.
On Tuesday, August 5, Road Transport Operators declared that fares for all categories of public transport—shared taxis, intra-city services (trotro), intercity (long-distance), and haulage—would go up by 20%, effective Friday, August 8. The proposed increment was in line with provisions under the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares.
However, in a statement issued on Thursday, August 7, the transport union said the decision had been shelved after consultations with the Ministry.
“Transport Operators have agreed to suspend the purported 20% increment in public transport fares as a result of the lack of broader consultations on the decision,” the statement read.
In the interim, all commercial transport operators have been directed to continue enforcing the 15% reduction in fares, which has been in effect since May 24, 2025.
The GRTCC has assured the public that any future fare adjustments will be preceded by extensive stakeholder consultations.
