GUCDA Appeals for Support Following Devastating Kantamanto Market Fire
The Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association (GUCDA) has expressed profound sorrow over the catastrophic fire that ravaged the Kantamanto Market on January 2, 2025.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 3, the association described the incident as a tragedy that has inflicted unimaginable losses on traders, including its members, many of whom have seen their goods and livelihoods destroyed.
Kantamanto Market, renowned as a hub of Ghana’s informal economy, is home to thousands of traders striving daily to support their families and improve their living conditions.
GUCDA highlighted the market’s vital role in the nation’s economic ecosystem and lamented the devastation caused by the fire.
“This tragedy has left countless traders grappling with unimaginable loss—not just of their goods, but of their livelihoods, dreams, and hopes for the future,” the statement read.
As the Kantamanto community mourns, GUCDA has called on the resilience and unity that define Kantamanto. It urged the government, corporate bodies, non-profit organizations, and individuals to provide urgent assistance to restore the market and the lives it supports.
“Kantamanto needs you now more than ever. Together, we can rebuild this iconic market into one that not only restores livelihoods but also ensures greater safety and sustainability for the future,” the association appealed.
GUCDA also pledged its commitment to mobilizing resources, advocating for support, and working to restore hope and dignity to those affected by the disaster.
The association called on all Ghanaians to rally around the Kantamanto community, emphasizing the power of unity and compassion in rebuilding the market.
