Ghana’s Black Bombers face tough Olympic qualification in Italy

The qualification to the Olympic Games for the Black Bombers took an unexpected turn when they failed to pick up any qualification places in Dakar, Senegal at the tail end of last year.

It was a monumental failure in many ways. Ghana has always been a boxing hub.

With four Olympic medals, Commonwealth titles and countless medals on the African continent, the country is considered one of the best places to learn the ropes of the sport.

It was therefore shocking when all 12 boxers could not make it into the Olympic Games.

Now in Italy, the Bombers are hoping to turn the tide. With 7 boxers now, they are looking to fight themselves into Paris this year.

The seven include Ghana’s recent bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, Samuel Takyi, highly rated amateur boxer Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey and Mark Kodjovi Ahondjo who was born in Britain but has chosen to fight for the motherland.

The qualification process is in Busto-Arsizio in Italy and will start from the 4th to the 11th of March.

The Bombers are expected to be back in Accra on March 12 to prepare for the African Games where boxing will begin on March 15.
