Ghana drops out of Africa’s top ten in FIFA ranking after disastrous AFCON campaign

The latest edition of the FIFA rankings has Ghana dropping out of the top 10 teams in Africa, with the West African country placing 11th after a series of disappointing results at the just-ended Africa Cup of Nations staged in Cameroon.

The Black Stars of Ghana exited the tournament after the three group stage games and failed to win a single match, scoring a point from a possible nine to finish bottom of their group which had Morocco, Gabon and Comoros representing.

Black Stars opened their campaign with a defeat against Morocco, drew with Gabon and then were stunned by debutants Comoros 3-2 – a defeat that confirmed Ghana’s first group stage exit since 2006.

In the overall ranking, Ghana have dropped to 61st.

Ghana’s spot has been taken by Burkina Faso who had a run impressive run in Cameroon, finishing fourth with third-placed Cameroon placed sixth.

Algeria, who came into the Afcon as champions, have dropped to sixth, unsurprisingly after also going through a disappointing round of group games.

Up next on the African Nations football calender is the World Cup play offs which will be played in the last week of March 2022.
