Dr. Abiba Zakariah Appointed Acting Commissioner of National Insurance Commission

President John Mahama has appointed Dr. Abiba Zakariah, a seasoned insurance professional and former Chief Operating Officer of WAICA Reinsurance Corporation, as the acting Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission (NIC).

Sources with knowledge of the appointment confirmed that Dr. Zakariah formally assumed office on Monday, February 17, 2025, following her appointment last week. She succeeds Michael Andoh, who had been serving as acting Commissioner since April 2023.

Industry analysts suggest that Dr. Zakariah’s immediate challenge will be addressing low insurance penetration in Ghana. She is expected to drive new policy initiatives and introduce incentives to strengthen the sector.

Additionally, some market players have recently called for a review of the minimum capital requirements for insurance companies, a key issue that Dr. Zakariah may have to navigate during her tenure.

Her leadership is anticipated to bring renewed strategic direction to the NIC as the industry adapts to evolving market demands.

Dr. Zakariah brings over two decades of experience in the insurance industry. She is the founder and Managing Director of Strategist Consortium, a management consulting firm specializing in insurance and risk management.

She previously served as Group Chief Operating Officer of WAICA Reinsurance Corporation, a position she resigned from in 2024. WAICA Re is owned by members of the West African Insurance Companies Association and operates across multiple international markets.

Dr. Zakariah is a Chartered Insurer and a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) and the Institute of Risk Management Professionals of Ghana.

Her academic credentials include a BSc (Hons.) and MBA from the University of Ghana, Legon and a PhD in Management Studies from the Swiss Management Centre.

She began her career at SIC Insurance (formerly State Insurance Corporation), where she built her expertise in underwriting, risk management, and corporate strategy.
