Haaland’s Hat-Trick Powers Norway to Dominant Win Over Israel, Closer to World Cup Qualification
In a commanding display at the Ullevaal Stadium, Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick, leading Norway to a resounding 5-0 victory over Israel in their latest World Cup qualifying match. This triumph positions Norway on the brink of qualifying for their first World Cup since 1998.
With this win, Norway now tops Group I with a nine-point cushion over second-placed Italy, who have two games in hand and are set to face Estonia later in the day. If Norway secures a win against Estonia on Tuesday, and Italy fails to win either of their next two matches, the Scandinavian side will clinch their spot in the finals scheduled for next year in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
A Fateful Night for Haaland
Despite missing two penalty attempts, Haaland’s performance was nothing short of spectacular. The Manchester City striker, currently the leading scorer in European qualifying with 12 goals, faced an early setback when his initial penalty was saved by Israeli goalkeeper Daniel Peretz. The referee ordered the penalty to be retaken due to encroachment, but Haaland’s second attempt was also parried away by Peretz.
However, Norway quickly found their rhythm. In the 18th minute, an own goal from Anan Khalaili put the hosts ahead. Haaland then showcased his striking prowess by scoring in a ninth consecutive international appearance, further solidifying his status as a key player for the national team.
Just ten minutes later, Norway doubled their lead when Peretz inadvertently kicked the ball off Idan Nachmias, who was under pressure from Haaland, leading to another own goal. Nachmias had to leave the field injured after colliding with the post during the play.
Haaland continued to shine, scoring his second goal in the 63rd minute with a powerful header from a cross by Antonio Nusa. He capped off his hat-trick with 18 minutes remaining, nodding in his third goal to complete the rout.
In other qualifying action, Hungary secured a 2-0 victory over Armenia in Group F, putting pressure on Portugal, who could qualify with consecutive wins against the Republic of Ireland and Hungary in their upcoming matches.
