IEAG Criticizes GRA Over Handling of Richard Nii Armah Quaye’s Tax Issues

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has strongly condemned the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for its public handling of tax-related matters involving businessman and founder of Bills Micro-Credit, Richard Nii Armah Quaye.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Executive Secretary, Samson Asaki Awingobit, the Association expressed deep concern over the GRA’s decision to publicly freeze Mr. Quaye’s bank accounts due to alleged tax discrepancies. The IEAG argued that while tax compliance is necessary, the public nature of the GRA’s actions could deter both local and foreign investors and instill fear among young entrepreneurs in Ghana.

The statement highlighted Mr. Quaye’s significant contributions to the Ghanaian economy, emphasizing that his businesses employ hundreds of Ghanaians and play a vital role in national economic growth.

“If the GRA has concerns about his tax compliance, there are diplomatic and professional channels through which these matters can be addressed, rather than resorting to actions that appear to publicly humiliate and vilify him,” the statement read.

The Association urged the GRA to adopt a more constructive and professional approach when dealing with business leaders, referencing best practices in other African countries like Kenya and Nigeria, where entrepreneurs receive active support from state institutions.

According to the IEAG, Ghana risks stifling business growth if regulatory authorities continue to employ methods that undermine local entrepreneurs. The statement stressed that Mr. Quaye, like any other businessman, deserves the opportunity to address any tax discrepancies through fair and confidential processes.
