IGP Declares All-Out War on Illegal Mining, Calls for Decisive Action by Regional Police Commanders
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has vowed to intensify the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey,” citing its severe threat to national security and environmental sustainability.
Speaking at the Regional Police Commanders’ Conference, COP Yohuno highlighted the growing crisis, particularly in the Western North region, where illegal mining activities have led to increased lawlessness. He revealed that armed criminals associated with galamsey operations have launched violent attacks on innocent civilians, including forest guards, endangering lives and public safety.
“This lawlessness must not be allowed to continue,” he declared.
Emphasizing the need for immediate and aggressive intervention, the IGP instructed Regional Commanders to adopt a coordinated and strategic approach to combat the menace.
“We are declaring war on illegal mining, and I expect every regional commander to take decisive action to bring perpetrators to justice,” he charged.
The IGP’s strong stance signals a renewed commitment by law enforcement agencies to tackle illegal mining, which has long been blamed for deforestation, pollution of water bodies, and loss of livelihoods in affected communities.
With rising concerns over the economic and security implications of galamsey, the effectiveness of the police crackdown will be closely monitored in the coming months.
