IMF Commends Senegal for Transparency, Welcomes Request for New Economic Programme
The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has lauded Senegal’s progress in addressing its recent misreporting case, describing the government’s efforts as “admirable” and reflective of a strong commitment to transparency and reform.
In a statement released after an informal briefing of the IMF Executive Board on Senegal, Ms Georgieva said the authorities had taken significant steps to identify public debt liabilities and were advancing the implementation of corrective measures to resolve the issue.
“The Senegalese authorities have made important progress in addressing Senegal’s misreporting case. I commend them for their admirable commitment to transparency, the actions taken to identify public debt liabilities, and their close collaboration with Fund staff on these issues,” she stated.
She further welcomed Senegal’s formal request for a new IMF-supported programme, noting that it signals the government’s determination to sustain economic reforms and strengthen macroeconomic stability.
“Initial discussions regarding the broad contours of the prospective program were already held in Dakar in August and formal negotiations are expected to begin during the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in mid-October,” Ms Georgieva disclosed.
According to the IMF chief, the new arrangement will seek to support Senegal’s policy priorities while promoting resilience and inclusive growth, with the ultimate goal of improving living standards.
“Our aim is to support Senegal’s policy priorities and strengthen macroeconomic stability, resilience, and inclusive growth and ultimately to help deliver better standards of living for the Senegalese people,” she added.
The IMF has already briefed its Executive Board on Senegal’s progress and the status of ongoing programme discussions. Ms Georgieva expressed optimism that the Fund and the Senegalese authorities are “in a good position to move expeditiously forward on all fronts.”
