Implementation Committee for Second Gas Processing Plant Inaugurated

Government has inaugurated an Implementation Committee to oversee the delivery of Ghana’s Second Gas Processing Plant (GPP II), a major infrastructure project expected to ease the country’s energy challenges and save millions of dollars in fuel costs.

The committee, chaired by the Deputy Minister for Energy Richard Gyan-Mensah, will be responsible for coordinating the technical, financial, and regulatory processes required for the successful execution of the project.

It is expected to work closely with key stakeholders in the energy sector to fast-track the plant’s development.

Speaking at the inauguration in Accra, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson charged the committee to complete and submit a comprehensive implementation plan within four weeks. He emphasised that the country could no longer afford the delays and bureaucracy that had stalled similar projects in the past.

“This is too important for our national welfare and economic stability. The time for back and forth is over.” Dr. Forson stated.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, who hosted the event, stressed the importance of the committee’s work, describing the GPP II as a crucial investment for the country’s energy security. He lamented the lack of progress since the commissioning of the Atuabo Gas Plant several years ago and said the new plant was long overdue.

In addition to the Technical Implementation Committee, a Communications and Social License Committee was also inaugurated. This committee, chaired by Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Hajia Shamima Muslim, will be responsible for community engagement, stakeholder communications, and managing the project’s social impact.

The Second Gas Processing Plant is expected to reduce the country’s reliance on expensive imported liquid fuels, improve gas supply for power generation and industrial use, and save the nation close to $500 million every two years. The project is also projected to create over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs and position Ghana as a regional energy hub.
