Inauguration of Ghana’s President-Elect Draws African Heads of State to Accra
Many are the dignitaries coming to witness this momentous occasion which will witness the swearing-in of President–elect, John Dramani Mahama and his Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang at the Independence Square in Accra, after their resounding victory at the polls in December 2024.
It is a historic moment for the two with John Mahama making a grand return to the presidency after his first full term in office from 2012 to 2016 and for Naana Jane, being the first woman in Ghana’s history to occupy that office.
Already confirmed to participate in the inauguration are a good number of presidents and heads of governments, including the presidents of Gabon, Botswana, Nigeria, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Namibia, Liberia, Kenya, Sierra Leone and DR Congo, as well as the Vice Presidents of Tanzania, Equatorial Guinea, and Uganda.

For President Mahama, his comeback is significant not only for its rarity but also for what it represents: a testament to the resilience of Ghana’s democracy. It highlights the nation’s commitment to free and fair elections, where leaders can return to power through the will of the people.

As he prepares to take the oath of office once again, Mahama’s return has reignited hope for a brighter future, with many viewing it as a second chance to address the nation’s pressing challenges.

His leadership during his first tenure left a lasting legacy in infrastructure and social development, and his return is seen as an opportunity to build on these foundations while navigating new economic and social realities.

In Ghana’s political history, few have achieved what Mahama is set to accomplish. His journey reflects not only his political acumen but also the strength of a democratic system that allows leaders to rise again, reaffirming the people’s right to choose their path forward.

As the world watches, Mahama’s historic return sends a message of hope, resilience, and the potential for renewal in governance. It is a moment that will surely be remembered as a milestone in Ghana’s evolving democracy.

Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang

Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s ascent to the position of Vice President of Ghana is a groundbreaking achievement in the nation’s history and a significant milestone in African politics.

As the first woman to occupy this esteemed office in Ghana, her rise symbolises a transformative shift toward gender inclusivity and representation in leadership.

Ghana, like many African countries, has seen the growing recognition of women’s pivotal role in shaping national and global agendas. A respected academic and former Minister of Education, Opoku-Agyemang brings to the role decades of expertise, integrity, and a commitment to addressing the challenges facing Ghanaians.

Her tenure is expected to inspire generations of women and girls, not only in Ghana but across Africa, showing them that leadership at the highest levels is within reach.

In a region where gender disparities in politics remain a pressing concern, her success challenges stereotypes and paves the way for greater participation of women in governance.
