International Flights from Accra Disrupted Due to Global Software Outage
International flights departing from Accra experienced significant disruptions on Friday, July 19, due to a widespread software outage affecting several airlines.
The outage, linked to issues with Microsoft-based systems, has caused delays and cancellations across the aviation industry.
United Airlines was among the carriers hit by the disruption. In a statement, the airline acknowledged that a third-party software outage had impacted its computer systems worldwide, including operations in Ghana.
“We are resuming some flights but expect schedule disruptions to continue throughout Friday. We have issued a waiver to make it easier for customers to change their travel plans via United.com or the United app,” the statement read.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) also addressed the issue, indicating that the disruption was beyond the control of individual airlines.
“Air transport is among the many industries affected by today’s worldwide IT issues with Microsoft and Crowdstrike. We sympathize with travellers who face disruption because of these issues which are outside of airlines’ control, and we thank travellers for their patience while Microsoft and Crowdstrike deploy solutions,” IATA stated.
Travellers are advised to monitor their flight status closely and consult their airlines for the latest updates on travel plans. Meanwhile, the aviation industry is working diligently to mitigate the impact of the outage and restore normal operations as swiftly as possible.
