Inter Miami Sparks Controversy in MLS with FIFA’s Controversial Decision

Inter Miami’s inclusion in the Club World Cup has ignited anger among Major League Soccer rivals, following FIFA’s announcement that David Beckham’s franchise will take the host nation spot for next summer’s tournament.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino cited Inter Miami’s victory in the Supporters Shield—a title awarded for the best regular season performance—as the reason for their qualification.

However, rivals contend that the MLS champion is determined through playoffs, leading to accusations that FIFA lacks clear qualification criteria. Critics suggest that the decision was rushed to ensure Lionel Messi’s participation in the revamped 32-team tournament.

Seattle Sounders will also represent the U.S. after winning the Concacaf Champions Cup in 2022.

FIFA’s decision-making process came under fire, especially since discussions about qualification criteria were ongoing before Miami clinched the Supporters Shield on October 2.

While MLS maintains that FIFA handled all decisions regarding the final slot, critics argue that Miami has received preferential treatment due to its star-studded lineup, which includes four former Barcelona legends.
